The Spinelli Group
About The Group
Named after Altiero Spinelli, founder of the Union of European Federalists (UEF) and one of the founding father of the European integration, the Spinelli Group was created in September 2010 in the European Parliament in Brussels by MEP Guy Verhofstadt (RENEW), former MEPs Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Sylvie Goulard, and former EP Vice President Isabelle Durant.
The Group is composed of MEPs belonging to different political families and works to strengthen the role of the European Parliament, promote institutional reforms, and enhance the Union’s capacity to act on the major challenges of our time.
Gabriele Bischoff, MEP of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the European Parliament, is the current Chair of the Spinelli Group since June 2025.
Our mission
The Spinelli Group is an informal intergroup bringing together Members of the European Parliament from across political families who share a common goal: advancing European integration and building a more democratic, effective and federal European Union.
In a world of increasing interdependence, the Spinelli Group believes that only a more united and politically integrated Europe can ensure democratic accountability, protect fundamental values, and deliver meaningful results for its citizens.
